Ugandan Music

The music is as different in Uganda as one region is from the next. Uganda Music – or Ugandan Music, enjoys its roots from more traditional music genres that have been passed down from one generation to the next accompanied by a plethora of instruments.

With so many musical varieties it is not surprising that popular music has been created from such a large variety forming the hybrid music enjoyed by Ugandans today – one of these being the Kadongo Kamu tunes. Today this is perhaps one of the music genres that might have had the greatest impact on the modern Ugandan Music scene.

As with many other African countries Hip-Hop and Dancehall Music is popular amongst Ugandans from all walks of life. Needless to say some of the trendiest tunes being heard are Afropop.

Kadongo Kamu was accompanied by the strums of a single guitar making its debut during the 50’s through to the 70’s, and was made even more popular by artists such as Jimmy Katuma with the Ebonies as well as Philly Lutaaya, transforming the music scene with well-liked albums such as Born in Africa.

Today many Ugandan Musicians enjoy international fame and popularity.
